Among the valves used in industrial flow control systems, gate valves are one of the most common and functional solutions. Used to fully open or close the flow of liquid or gas, this type of valve is known for its low pressure loss and reliable sealing properties. So, what isa gate valve, how does it work and in which applications is it preferred?

Gate Valve Description

A gate valve is a type of valve that operates with a slider (gate) moving inside and controls the fluid passage with the up-and-down movement of this slider. The gate is placed perpendicular to the flow line. When the valve is fully open, the fluid passes through unimpeded; when it is fully closed, the flow is completely interrupted.

Therefore, gate valves are suitable for fully open or fully closed operation, notstepped.

How does it work?

Gate valves are usually operated by a handwheel. As the wheel is rotated, the spindle in the internal mechanism moves the gate up or down:

  • When it liftsup: Valve opens, flow is free.

  • When it goesdown: The valve closes, the flow is completely cut off.

Since the fluid path is straight, pressure loss is minimal, making them ideal for long-distance pipelines.

Gate Valve Types

Different types are available according to the slide structure and sealing type:

Type Description
Solid Gate Valve It hasone piece gate, it is used for general purpose.
Flexible Gate Valve The gate is slightly flexible, providing better sealing.
Knife Gate Valve Suitable for fluids withsolid particles, creating a shearing effect.
Rising Shaft Type Shaft movement is visible, position control is easy.
Non-rising Shaft Type Space saving , suitable for closed areas.

Advantages

✅ Fully open or fully closed operation
✅ Very low pressure loss
✅ Suitable for large diameter pipelines
✅ Long life and durability
✅ Available in various materials and pressure classes

Areas of Use

Gate valves are used in a wide range of industries:

  • Water treatment plants

  • Oil and gas pipelines

  • Chemical industry

  • Power plants

  • Fire extinguishing systems

  • HVAC systems

  • Industrial steam lines

Why should a gate valve be preferred?

Thanks to their low cost and durable construction, gate valves are indispensable especially in lines requiring full closing or full opening. In addition, thanks to their low pressure loss and in-line free passage advantages, they increase fluid efficiency in long pipelines.
